Anatol Girs (1904 – 1990) was a graphic artist and publisher from Warsaw who met Borowski in 1945 while both were imprisoned in Dautmergen (prior to being moved to Dautmergen and then Dachau, Girs, like Borowski, was also imprisoned in Auschwitz) and for whom Borowski worked at the Family Tracing Service in Munich immediately after the war. It was Girs who encouraged Borowski, the poet, to write prose (unfortunately, his stark, wrenching poems, many of which were written at Auschwitz, remain largely unpublished in English translation).
